Munich Sightseeing Tour by bus
Date: Monday, September 1st, 1997
Time: 09:30 hrs
Price: DEM 49,-
Munich the capital of Bavaria, on the "Isar" River, is an industrial
and cultural center, known for its elegant shops, fashionable night clubs,
great breweries, and lively festivals. The old part of the city has a number
of baroque and rococo buildings, mostly built in the first half of the
18th-century by the rulers of Bavaria, who were inspired by Italian models.
In the center of the old city is the "Marienplatz", a well known
square, which is dominated by the city hall, the ornate "Neues Rathaus".
Next to the city hall is the 15th-century "Frauenkirche" (Church
of Our Lady), a massive late Gothic brick cathedral with twin towers. The
city also has a large English garden, with a lake and a Chinese Pagoda.
The baroque "Nymphenburg" Castle is located in an opulently landscaped
park. A large stadium was erected for the 1972 Olympic Games, which were
held in Munich. After a comprehensive survey of the city we will pass the
olympic grounds on our way to the Castle of "Nymphenburg", the
former Summer residence of the Bavarian Kings. Munich is the seat of the
Ludwig Maximilian University, founded in "Ingolstadt" in 1472
by Ludwig IX, duke of Upper and Lower Bavaria, and was transferred to "Landshut"
in 1800 and to Munich in 1826. In addition, Munich has a technical university
(founded in 1868) as well as a dozen further institutions of comparable
status. Berlin is the only German city that has more students than the
110,000 enrolled here in Munich.
Dachau Memorial Site
Date: Monday, September 1st, 1997
Time: 09:30 hrs
Price: DEM 45,-
In Germany, the Nazis established concentration camps almost immediately
after assuming power on January 30th, 1933. A decree in February removed
the constitutional protection against arbitrary arrest. The concentration
camp near Dachau represents one of the most impressive documents of the
cruelty of the Third Reich. The security police had the authority to arrest
anyone and to commit that person to a camp for an indefinite period. The
political police, known as the Gestapo, imposed "protective custody"
on a wide variety of political opponents: Communists, socialists, religious
dissenters and Jews. This Memorial of inhumanity has been preserved as
an everlasting reminder of the cruelties committed during the Third Reich.
Oberammergau Bavarian Alps

Ludwig II. You will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the beautiful panorama
of the Bavarian Alps. Oberammergau, on the "Ammer" River, situated
in the Bavarian Alps, is a popular tourist resort and noted wood carving
center. The famous Passion Play, which originated in 1634, is performed
here. It was first presented by the inhabitants in gratitude for the end
of a plague. Except for the years 1870, 1920, and 1940, the play has been
presented every tenth year since 1680 in keeping a vow made by the 17th-
century townspeople. The daylong performances are attended by thousands.
